DUNGUN: About 150 residents of Kampung Pasir Raja in Hulu Dungun near here have been able to return and begin cleaning their homes since early Thursday morning (Dec 28) thanks to the improving flood situation and pleasant weather.
Food stall operator Tengku Maimun Tengku Ismail, 59, said she was eager to clean up the stall in front of her house because the flooding that started on Saturday night had impacted her source of income.
The family-operated stall, which has been in business since the 1980s, is located next to the river, causing it to be submerged in floods every monsoon season, she added.
"Heavy rain since Friday caused our house and stall to be flooded up to knee level. Thankfully, we were able to store everything in higher places, so not much was damaged,” she told Bernama on Thursday.
Tengku Maimun, who is assisted by her husband, Zulkarnain Md Alias, 61, and their youngest child, Muhd Irfan, 20, said they started cleaning the house and stall at 7am because she planned to reopen on Friday since it has been nearly a week without business.
Meanwhile, Badariah Ahmad, 63, expressed gratitude that this flood was not as severe as the ones she had experienced before.
The single mother also started the house cleaning at 10am, considering her son, Fazrin Zamli, 35, would start working soon.
"We’re only doing what we can. Alhamdulillah, this year’s flood wasn’t as bad as previous years, and not many items were ruined because we made early preparations,” she said.
A check by Bernama found that the flood situation was improving, and the temporary relief centre at Kampung Pasir Raja community hall here, which houses 47 families, is expected to be closed by 5 pm on Thursday. – Bernama
