Counting down to the New Year

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians can look forward to ushering in the New Year with various countdown celebrations on Dec 31, including fireworks displays and concerts nationwide.

The recently opened The Exchange TRX mall is hosting a New Year’s Eve Countdown Party with a drone show and fireworks at the Raintree Plaza open space from 5pm to 1am.

The party will showcase the sensational K-Pop artist B.I, LEO, Clean Bandit, Grace Chatto and local acts such as Airliftz, Lunadira, CLAUDIA, Shelhiel, Ashley Lau and Bad Habits.

Revellers can secure their spot by downloading the Exchange TRX mobile app.

They can also head down to the LaLaport BBCC for an amazing view of the Kuala Lumpur city skyline while enjoying a night of fun-filled entertainment on Dec 31.

The Happy Countdown 2024 event will feature a midnight party countdown, a New Year’s night market, SmileyWorld concert, DJ sets, live rap and a rocking live band.

Those who prefer a more romantic place to watch the midnight fireworks together with their loved ones can head on to Desa Park City’s The Waterfront vicinity, where the free Year-End Light Festival is ongoing until Jan 7.

Illuminated with 60,000 LED lights and backed by the city’s fireworks, visitors can watch them glow in soft reflection by the lake.

IOI City Mall in Putrajaya is coming up with a concert and fireworks fiesta with a star-studded lineup that includes Gary Chaw, Misha Omar, Midnight Fusic, Asyraf Nasir and Yonnyboi.

There will also be a magic show, fire-eater and pyro performances and appearances by characters from the animated children’s show, Didi & Friends.

On the other hand, IOI Mall Puchong’s open car park will feature performances, live music and fireworks, including a magic show and children-friendly amusement with mascots.

IOI Properties chief operating officer of Property Investment (Malaysia) Chris Chong said Malaysians can expect a good time during the celebration.

“Through these celebrations, we want to extend our heartfelt wishes for a Happy New Year filled with hope and positivity,” he said.

Sunway is ushering the New Year at three locations nationwide with countdown celebrations and fireworks displays.

Pinkfish Coutdown, which is well known for dance, urban pop and live music, will be taking place in Sunway Lagoon in Selangor, while Sunway Velocity in KL will see a large-scale street countdown with local artistes.

In Ipoh, the Lost World of Tambun is offering the Fantastic Land Music Festival within the theme park.

Sunway Malls & Theme Parks chief executive officer HC Chan said they have issued an advisory on what to bring during the celebration, including raincoats, face masks and others to ensure everyone is comfortable and can have a good time.

“We have also made arrangements for Sunway Pyramid and Sunway Velocity malls to be operational until midnight for those who wish to be indoors,” he said.

Taking a backseat this time, KLCC said that there would not be any New Year’s Eve fireworks or celebration, in solidarity with people who are going through tough times globally.

“As 2023 comes to a close, we’d like to invite everyone to spend some time with us winding down in KLCC Park, and contemplating at the Lake Symphony Fountains before we light up the Petronas Twin Towers at midnight, as a symbol of our shared journey and our hopes for the coming New Year,” it said.

When contacted, a spokesman from the Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) reminded Malaysians to be prepared and take precautions when gathering and celebrating.

“Let’s take care of our personal hygiene especially in crowded places, like masking up and using hand sanitiser,” he said.
