Non-Muslims must respect and refrain from interfering in Islamic matters, says Selangor Sultan

PETALING JAYA: Non-Muslims must respect and refrain from interfering in matters relating to Islam, says Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Sultan Sharafuddin, who is also the National Islamic Council chairman, said so in response to a proposal by Beruas MP Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham to include a non-Muslim legal expert in the special committee to study the proposal to strengthen the Syariah Court's role.

To this, Sultan Sharafuddin publicly declined Ngeh’s suggestion in a statement on the Selangor Royal Office’s Facebook page on Friday (Dec 29).

“His Royal Highness hopes that politicians, especially non-Muslims, refrain from continuously interfering in Islamic matters.

“Instead, non-Muslims should emulate Muslims, who do not interfere in the religious affairs of other faiths in Malaysia,” the Ruler said.

He added that the committee had already included experts who were knowledgeable in various fields specifically involving law and Islam.

Sultan Sharafuddin said he also took note of DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook’s statement on the matter.
