Worker killed on New Year's Eve died when explosive materials went off without warning

SEREMBAN: A 40-year-old worker who was putting up fireworks on the roof of the car park of a Port Dickson hotel near here was killed on the spot on Sunday (Dec 31) as the explosive materials detonated without warning.

The state Occupational Safety and Health Department said in a statement that the preliminary investigations have revealed that the 40-year-old man was an employee of a company engaged to put up the fireworks for a display.

"The victim and three others were putting up the fireworks when they went off suddenly. The deceased sustained injuries to his face and body and died on the spot," it said in a statement.

It added that it has also seized some documents related to the work and said that the investigations are ongoing.

It was earlier reported that the victim was killed after being hit by fragments from exploding fireworks in the mishap which happened around 11.50am on Sunday.

The Department said it was the responsibility of employers to ensure their employees worked under a safe environment.

This, it said, was stipulated under Section 15(1) of the DOSH Act 1994.

"Employers have full control over any activity at the workplace and they need to conduct a risk analysis and have in place effective risk controls before any work activity is carried out.

"This is to eliminate or reduce risks for employees and the public and to prevent accidents," it said.

Earlier on Monday (Jan 1), a one-minute video and images of the explosion went viral on X.
