JB cops on the hunt for man caught on CCTV stealing from surau donation box


JOHOR BARU: Police are looking for a man who was caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) stealing from a surau donation box.

Seri Alam OCPD Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the incident was believed to have happened at about 6.30pm on Monday (Jan 1).

"We have received a police report from a 60-year-old local man about the incident that has gone viral on social media.

"Based on initial investigations, the incident was believed to have happened at a surau in Ulu Tiram," he said in a statement here on Wednesday (Jan 3).

He said that the case was being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code, which carried a jail term of up to 10 years and fines.

"We are actively hunting down the suspect and we urge those with information about the incident to channel it to the police to assist in investigation," he said.

He said those with information could channel them to investigating officer ASP Mohd Hasffizan Roslan at 012-783 3499 or 07-386 4222.

Earlier, several videos of a man with a black cap stealing from the donation box made rounds on social media.
