KUANTAN: He thought he had found real love through social media, but to the person on the other side, the tiler was nothing but a victim to be fleeced of RM29,000.
Sharing his story, the victim, known as Foong, 42, said he got to know a woman through Facebook on Dec 5 before starting a relationship with her.
Later, he frequently contacted the woman via WhatsApp, before the suspect invited him to join a business via an application that promised lucrative returns.
“I had to buy items such as watches and jewellery and later sell them to obtain a commission.
“There were three transactions amounting to RM29,000 to different accounts between Dec 13 and 18, but the profits that I was supposed to get could not be withdrawn,” he said.
Foong shared his story at a media conference also attended by Semambu assemblyman Chan Chun Kuang and Malaysian International Humanitarian Organisation public relations officer Daniel Khoo here yesterday.
Efforts to contact the woman were in vain, said Foong, after calls and messages were not replied to, prompting him to lodge a police report at Kuantan district police headquarters on Dec 24.
Khoo advised the people to be careful and not to be easily cheated by new friends on social media.
“We have received many complaints on such scam cases,” he said. — Bernama
