Police investigating two over syariah law enactment remarks

KUALA LUMPUR: Bukit Aman have begun a sedition probe into two individuals over the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs Malaysia (MKI) issue.

In a statement Thursday (Jan 4), Federal CID director Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said they were also investigating the two for misuse of networking facilities.

"Two investigation papers have been opened in connection with the case.

"We are investigating it under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act," he said, adding that the case was still in the investigation stages.

He advised the public not to make any speculations which can disrupt investigations.

"We also wish to remind the public to be considerate on sensitive issues which are connected to public order and national security,” he added.

He, however, did not identify the two individuals in question.

It was reported earlier that various parties had taken Beruas MP Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham to task over his proposal to include non-Muslim constitutional experts in the special committee to review syariah law in the country.

On Sunday (Dec 31), Ngeh apologised and retracted his earlier statement.

He was reported as saying it was not his intention to interfere in the management of Islamic affairs and that he had initially thought the government was seeking proposals to amend the Federal Constitution.
