Teen motorcyclist dies, pillion rider injured in accident at Bukit Tengah


BUTTERWORTH: A 19-year-old died while his pillion was injured in an accident on Wednesday night (Jan 3).

Central Seberang Prai OCPD Asst Comm Tan Cheng San said the incident occurred at 11.12pm along Jalan Permatang Tinggi in Bukit Tengah.

"We received information about the accident involving a motorcycle and a car.

"During the incident, the motorcycle rider died, while his 16-year-old pillion sustained injuries to his legs and is being treated at the Bukit Mertajam Hospital," he said in a statement on Thursday (Jan 4).

ACP Tan said initial investigations found that the accident happened when the motorcyclist and his pillion were heading from Bukit Tengah to Macang Bubok.

"A car from the opposite side turned right at the intersection to turn into the Permatang Tinggi area.

"The motorcyclist was unable to avoid the car and brake in time.

"He crashed into the left door of the car.

"A post-mortem is being conducted at the Bukit Mertajam Hospital forensic unit for further investigation," he said.

ACP Tan said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.

He then urged anyone who witnessed the incident or can assist with investigations to come forward.
