Johor-Singapore commuters taking no chances

JOHOR BARU: Malaysians working in Singapore are taking some measures to protect themselves from Covid-19 as they travel between the two countries amid the rise in cases.

For now, they are following the basic steps of wearing face masks, maintaining good hygiene and avoiding crowded areas.

Environment services officer Mohamad Ariffin Mohd Lawi, 31, said while there are concerns about a resurgence of the disease, it was not as intense as during the early days of the pandemic.

“In the past, when we saw a rise in cases, there was a sense of panic as most countries were still in the process of vaccinating their population.

“However, the situation is completely different today as most of us have now been fully vaccinated, and the chances of governments tightening controls are very low.

“For now, I will stick to wearing a face mask, especially at work and in crowded areas,” said Mohd Ariffin, who has been working in Singapore since 2019.

He added that his company has also taken some proactive measures to protect its employees by monitoring their temperatures.

Echoing the sentiment was accountant development assistant R. Paveethra, 28, who also works in Singapore.

“A few people around me recently tested positive for Covid-19 and they have all taken their quarantine seriously.

“I think that is all we can do for now,” she said.
