Immigration rounds up over 100 foreigners in Rawang raid

RAWANG: At least 106 illegal immigrants have been rounded up following an operation at the Seri Cempaka Apartments here.

Immigration Department deputy director-general Jafri Embok Taha said they raided the apartment at around 12.30am on Saturday (Jan 6).

"Our team comprised 309 personnel from various departments with support from the Immigration Departments of Melaka, KLIA, Negri Sembilan and Federal Territories.

"Also present were 12 officers from the National Registration Department and 10 Civil Defence Force personnel," he said in a statement on Saturday.

He said during the operations, they checked 468 individuals, with 106 identified as illegal immigrants, including a six-month-old infant.

"Among those identified were Bangladeshi, Myanmar, Indonesian and Pakistani nationals.

"Some of the challenges we faced during this operation include bottlenecked entry points to the apartment due to indiscriminate vehicle parking.

"This made it hard for us to enter the location," he said, adding that the apartment comprised eight five-storey buildings of 80 to 100 units each.

He said they raided the location following complaints about illegal immigrants living there.

"Among the offences identified included not having any identification documents and overstaying.

"Those detained have been taken to the Bukit Jalil Immigration Detention Depot in Kuala Lumpur for further action," he said.
