Man drowns at Pantai Sepat Kuantan

KUANTAN: A man drowned at Pantai Sepat here on Saturday (Jan 6) after being swept away by strong currents.

Kuantan district police chief ACP Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said they received a report about the incident involving the victim Khoo Kim Chai, 36, at 1.36 pm on Saturday.

He said the victim, a resident of Klang, Selangor, had gone to the beach with a 37-year-old male friend and two children at 9 am.

While playing in the waves, both the victim and his friend were swept away by the current, but the friend managed to save himself.

"The victim was said to have disappeared from sight, prompting his friend to seek help from others until the missing man was eventually located,” he said in a statement today.

Immediately after, he said the victim received respiratory aid from personnel from the Pahang Civil Defence Force while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

However, Khoo reportedly died at about 11.10 am while receiving treatment at the emergency ward of Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan.

Meanwhile, Pekan district Civil Defence Force officer (PA) Capt Ahmad Azmi Hanafiah, in a statement, said he received information about the incident at 9.50 am from cleaning workers on duty around the beach.

He said the beach rescue personnel, together with a doctor who happened to be at the scene, helped the victim by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation before he was taken to the hospital at about 10.30 am. – Bernama
