Factory that was processing fake cough mixture raided


PUTRAJAYA: A factory processing fake cough syrup in Mantin, Negri Sembilan, was raided by the authorities, and a 38-year-old woman believed to be responsible for operating it has been arrested.

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry enforcement director-general Datuk Azman Adam said, through the integrated operation, 10,000 bottles of cough syrup, 900 litres of liquid suspected to be fake cough syrup in a mixing machine, a vehicle, and several other types of equipment were seized.

“All of the ingredients, along with trade documents were seized, with the total value estimated at RM236,516,” he said in a statement on Friday, reported Bernama.

He said the raid was carried out on Dec 15, following complaints and also intelligence gathered over three months. The raid also involved teams from the Heath Ministry and the Inland Revenue Board, among others.

Two other premises in the light industrial area used for the illegal activity were also sealed.

“Following the raid, five accounts were frozen involving nine entities, with four of them being company accounts and five individual accounts, with the total in the accounts amounting to RM10.68mil,” he said.

Azman said the companies will be investigated under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terror-ism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 and the woman will be investigated under the Trademarks Act 2019.

He added that the Health Ministry will also conduct further investigations under the Poisons Act 1952, which provides for a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both, upon conviction.
