Immigration Dept nabs 95 illegal immigrants during ops in Gopeng


IPOH: Some 95 illegal immigrants of various nationalities have been arrested by the Perak Immigration Department during an operation here and in Gopeng.

State Immigration deputy director Sharmanrizal Rustam said the arrests were made after checking 119 individuals at 25 premises in the two areas between 11am on Saturday (Jan 6) and midnight on Sunday (Jan 7).

"Those arrested included five Indonesian men, 18 Bangladesh nationals (nine men, seven women), 11 Cambodians (one man and 10 women), 18 Myanmar nationals (nine men, seven women, two children) and 39 from Thailand (16 men and 23 women).

"Also arrested were one man from Pakistan, one woman from Laos, one woman from Philippines and one Egyptian man They were arrested at seven clothing shops, seven eateries, a laundromat, an entertainment centre, a recreational centre and eight hawker lots," he added.

Sharmanrizal said in a statement on Sunday that all those arrested would be investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act for not having valid documents to stay in the country, Section 15(1)(c) of the same Act for overstaying and Rule 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations for violating their social visit pass.

"We hope that the people will come forward with information to help us combat against the influx of illegal immigrants in the country.

"We will also take stern actions against employers or individuals who hire or harbor illegal immigrants, including hauling them to court," he added.
