Nine-year-old girl found drowned in Gerik


IPOH: A nine-year-old girl was found drowned at the Mat Shah Jetty in Pulau Banding, Gerik.

Gerik OCPD Superintendent Zulkifli Mahmood said the victim was found near a houseboat at the jetty on Saturday (Jan 6) at about 6.50pm.

"The girl was found about 6m deep in the water. Medical personnel that arrived at the location confirmed her death," he said in a statement on Sunday (Jan 7).

"The post mortem that was conducted at Gerik Hospital found that she had died from drowning," he said, adding that there was no foul play involved.

"The body has been reclaimed by the family for burial," he added.

Supt Zulkifli said an interview with the victim's 40-year-old father, who works at the jetty, found that the girl had played in the waters with another friend prior to the incident at about 6pm.

"She was found to be missing at about 6.30pm," he said, adding that the police received a call about the incident at 8.20pm. The police extend its condolences to the family," he added.
