JOHOR BARU: The examination director is allowing STPM and SPM students in Johor whose examination centres have been affected by floods to postpone sitting for the exams, says state exco member Norliza Noh.
This measure is part of the plans under Ops Payung and will be implemented if students face disruptions due to floods, she added.
Norliza said 48,276 candidates will be sitting for the SPM exam from tomorrow until March 7 in 364 examination centres, while 8,831 candidates will sit for the STPM exams from Jan 22 to Feb 6 at 75 examination centres in Johor.
“The state government and the state Education Department are working closely to launch Ops Payung if floods happen during the exams,” she said here yesterday.
Norliza, who is state education, information and communication committee chairman, said if an examination centre is flooded but does not affect its surroundings, the candidates involved will either be accommodated at the school or at a relative’s house closest to the school.
If floods were to hit an examination centre, including surrounding areas and access roads, then the candidates will be granted a postponement by the examination director.
The date for the candidates to re-sit the exam would then be determined by the Examination Board, she added.
“The welfare of candidates and examination staff is the school’s responsibility, including their food and drink.
“We will also be working with the Civil Defence Force and the army to transport candidates to examination centres.
“The students are given the leeway to wear proper home clothes if the roads leading to the examination centre are flooded,” she added.
“As of now, there are recommendations and requirements for the SPM exam to be postponed. But for Johor, it will run as scheduled by the Education Ministry.
“Hopefully, the examinations as well as classes of other students in Johor will proceed without problems during this north-east monsoon season,” she added.
