KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 43 reports have been lodged nationwide in connection with the so-called "Dubai Move".
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the reports were lodged on attempts to harm parliamentary democracy through speculation about changing the government.
"We are investigating viral videos that saw three or four individuals talk about changing the government.
"One of them is Raja Petra Kamarudin, who talked about 120 statutory declarations that could bring about a change in government.
"We have opened an investigation under Section 124C of the Penal Code, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act and Section 505B of the Penal Code" he told a press conference in Bukit Aman on Tuesday (Jan 9).
"We understand if it comes from a political party leader or a high ranking member but individuals such as Raja Petra have no local standi to talk about such things.
"In the past, we have gone through changes in government, where a party leader would bring a list of names to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. This time, it has only been unfounded speculation, causing public distress. So we have to investigate the matter before things get out of hand," he said.
On claims that some MPs were paid to support a change in government, the IGP said police would investigate.
"If we find such elements, we will refer it to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC)," he said.
He also did not rule out the possibility that individuals such as Chegubard and Papagomo would be called in over the investigation.
Asked on possible action against Raja Petra, Razarudin said at least 20 police reports have been lodged against him.
"However, he is overseas. As I mentioned previously, we can only get the cooperation from foreign authorities (where he is at) if our laws are similar or in line with theirs – but it is not," he said.
On Dec 30, Community Communications Department (J-Kom) deputy director-general Datuk Ismail Yusop claimed that a meeting occurred between Opposition and government leaders who were on holiday in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Several Perikatan leaders have denied involvement in the purported plot.
However, Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor claimed that the Opposition had obtained enough statutory declarations to form a new government.
