Floods: Number of evacuees rises to almost 8,000 in Johor


JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims in Johor has continued to increase, with 7,947 evacuees recorded as of 8pm compared to 7,460 people at 4pm on Tuesday (Jan 9).

The Johor disaster management committee said that the victims are from 2,196 families seeking shelter at 53 temporary relief centres in six districts.

"The majority of the victims are from Kota Tinggi, with 4,705 people from 1,289 families placed at 26 relief centres in the district.

"A significant spike was recorded in Johor Baru, where the number of victims increased from 1,007 people at 4pm to 1,753 people at 8pm," it said in a statement on Tuesday.

Other flood-affected districts are Kluang with 1,306 victims, Kulai (86), Segamat (75) and Pontian (22).

The relief centre with the highest number of victims is at SK Bukit Mutiara, here, with 431 people from three villages.
