PUTRAJAYA: Five new members have been appointed to the seven-member Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC), says the Home Minister.
According to Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, former prime minister’s department’s coordination and implementation unit chief director Datuk Zolkopli Dahalan has been appointed the new IPCC chairman.
Meanwhile, Saifuddin said former prime minister’s department advisory board chief director Datuk Mohamad Jazamuddin Ahmad Nawawi was appointed the new IPCC deputy chairman.
Saifuddin also said former National Audit Department’s financial sector director Martina@Kartina Zamhari was appointed as a member of the IPCC.
Other appointees to the IPCC, said Saifuddin, were former police’s logistics and technology department deputy director (operations/technical) Datuk Shukri Abdullah and also former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission special operations department senior director Datuk Tan Kang Sai.
Saifuddin said the IPCC will act as an independent monitoring body for the police regarding misconduct complaints, which he said is a core value towards good practices and administration.
“The IPCC Act also places the role of the IPCC as a mandatory referral that obliges the police to refer cases involving sexual crimes or deaths in custody (to the commission),” added Saifuddin.
Last year, the IPCC Bill was passed in Parliament after two years, and it replaced the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) Bill tabled in 2019 by the former Pakatan Harapan administration.
