Floods: Number of evacuees in Johor climbs to 8,221 overnight


JOHOR BARU: The number of victims currently displaced by floods in Johor stands at 8,221 at 53 temporary relief centres in six districts as of 9am Wednesday (Jan 10).

As of 4pm Tuesday (Jan 9), the state had 7,460 evacuees housed at 57 relief centres.

According to the state disaster management committee, Kota Tinggi has the highest number of victims with 4,730 housed in 26 relief centres.

“This is followed by Johor Baru (1,976 victims), Kluang (1,308), Segamat (99), Kulai (86) and Pontian (22).

“The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) also issued a warning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in most districts in Johor later today,” it added.

It also said four rivers in the state have surpassed the danger level because of frequent rainfall over the last few days.

“The rivers are Sungai Kahang near Kampung Contoh in Kluang, Sungai Kepala Orang near Kampung Sri Jaya in, Sungai Linggiu and Sungai Johor all in Kota Tinggi,” it added.
