JITRA: A woman who is nine months' pregnant and her husband have been arrested with 10.2kg of ganja found in the vehicle they were travelling in.
They were believed to be smuggling the contraband into the country at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex on Sunday (Jan 7).
Kubang Pasu district police chief Supt Rodzi Abu Hassan said the husband and wife, aged 34 and 35 respectively, from Perlis, were detained at about 11.50pm by a police patrol team.
"We conducted an inspection on a pick-up truck and found 10 packages or drugs believed to be ganja weighing 10.28kg wrapped in clear plastic hidden under the rear passenger seat," he told reporters here on Wednesday (Jan 10).
"The drugs are believed to have been smuggled in from a neighbouring country for distribution to the northern states and the quantity is able to supply a total of 3,200 addicts."
Rodzi said that based on the investigation, the suspects frequently travelled to Thailand through the Bukit Kayu Hitam border at night.
"The investigation is still underway to determine if they are part of a syndicate and how long they have been doing this," he said.
He said urine samples of both suspects tested positive for ganja and the couple have been remanded until Jan 14 for investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
"The husband has eight previous instances of drug-related offences while the woman has three," he added.
Meanwhile, in a separate case, a team of officers from the Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department arrested a 29-year-old lorry driver and seized 10.1kg of ganja in Jalan Sujana Lunas, Kulim.
Kulim district police chief Supt Mohd Azizul Mohd Khairi said that drugs worth RM31,325 were found in the vehicle after an inspection at about 5.20pm on Sunday.
He said police found 10 compressed lumps of dried plants suspected to be ganja wrapped in plastic.
"The suspect, who has two previous criminal records, has been remanded until Jan 14 in accordance with Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for the offence of drug trafficking," he said in a statement on Wednesday. – Bernama
