Joint CNY carnival in KK promises loads of festive excitement

KOTA KINABALU: An array of exciting Chinese New Year events is scheduled in the city from February, jointly hosted by the Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) and Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK).

FCAS president Tan Sri TC Goh said the first programme will be launched on Feb 3, a Saturday, with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor as guest of honour.

“Activities including lion and dragon dance performances, entertainment shows, fireworks display and Spring Festival decorations have been lined up to keep guests and the public entertained during the official launch of the street carnival (at Dataran Deasoka, Gaya Street),” he said.

“The Lido Chinese New Year Market will be from Feb 4 to 8 at Lido Square,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Jan 10).

Goh, who is also president of the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong), said the market will have some 100 stalls selling a wide range of Chinese New Year goods, handicraft, decorative items and delicacies.

“There will also be cultural performances featuring local singers, dancers, as well as lion and dragon dance troupes,” he said.

City mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah thanked Goh and FCAS for their years of cooperation and support in bringing the local authority and the people together, and for putting on large-scale Chinese New Year events for the public.

He said FCAS had played a positive role in building a united and harmonious society.

The mayor also said the Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) choir would take part in the joint carnival, performing festive songs.
