‘No additional charges to get 5G access’

PUTRAJAYA: Telecommunication companies will not impose additional charges for subscribers to access the 5G network, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He said the chief executive officers of all telecommunications companies had notified him of their decision on this matter.

“The subscribers have various options in choosing additional plans and services according to the suitability of individual use.

“However, they need to ensure that the device they use supports the 5G network,” he told a press conference after conducting the Cellular Service Quality Test (Voice Calls) here yesterday, Bernama reported.

On Nov 7 last year, Fahmi was reported to have said that the 5G network coverage in Malaysia was 73%.

Previously, he was reported to have said that the government would consider taking action against telecommunication companies if they charged additional fees for accessing 5G services.

Fahmi also urged all mobile network operators to pay serious attention to all telecommunication-related problems. voiced out by the people.

“The people deserve to get quality service that is equivalent to the value of their service subscription,” he added.

Asked about the current status of the 5G network coverage, he said he would announce this after the Cabinet meeting today.

There will also be an announcement on whether the Digital Nasional Berhad, set up in 2021 to develop the 5G network and infrastructure, will be placed under the Communications Ministry or the Digital Ministry.

“I will announce these two (matters) tomorrow. I need to present them to the Cabinet first,” he said.
