Armed Forces brigade mobilised in Johor for post-flood ops

KOTA TINGGI: An Armed Forces brigade has been deployed to assist post-flood efforts in Johor, says Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The Defence Minister said that five officers and 55 personnel from the Markas 7 brigade are fully prepared to support post-flood efforts, including cleaning up areas hit by floods.

“The brigade has identified the flood areas that their personnel will have to cover. They will be there at all times to provide necessary assistance.

“The Army will also be assisting in post-flood clean-up efforts of those affected once the water level returns to normal,” he told reporters in a press conference after visiting the SK Gembut flood relief centre here on Saturday (Jan 13).

He also encouraged volunteers to come forward to assist in post-flood efforts as the number of relief centres decreased with the improving flood situation.

“The decision to shut down relief centres comes from the district office. It takes into account the weather forecast, high tides, stagnant water and other factors.

“We need to take into consideration the safety of the people before allowing them to return home and start cleaning up their homes,” he said.
