Umno sec-gen reminds BN MPs of RM100mil bond

KUALA LUMPUR: A fine of RM100mil may be slapped against any Umno or Barisan Nasional MP who acts against the party stance, reiterated Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

The Umno secretary-general said that all Umno and Barisan members, who are elected as an MP, have signed a RM100mil bond before the Commissioner of Oath.

"Any breach (to the agreement) will require them to pay a sum of RM100mil to the party," he said in a post on Saturday (Jan 13).

These were among the amendments to the party's constitution that were made during the party's special general assembly which took place on Jan 13 last year, he said.

He also warned that Umno MPs may face expulsion and risk having their parliamentary seat declared vacant for joining political coalitions that are not affiliated with the party.

"Following the amendment, Article 20.11 of the party constitution, it states that the membership of an Umno member who is elected as an MP will be automatically stripped from the party if he or she joins a political coalition that is not affiliated with Umno.

"This is also applicable to any members who sign any agreement to form a political coalition with the opposing party which goes against the decision made by the party," Asyraf Wajdi explained.

"The termination of membership will invoke the Anti-Hopping Law provision for the seat to be declared vacant which will result in a by-election to be called," he added.

This is reflected in the amendments made to the party constitution last year aimed at preventing its MPs from switching sides and allegiance.

Asyraf said the amendment to the party's constitution was made after learning the lesson from the political instability which was seen after the 14th General Election in 2018.

His remarks come after talk of a movement led by certain figures within the Opposition to bribe influential leaders and MPs to topple the federal government.

On Jan 11, Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the allegations that the coalition has bribed the Yang di-Pertuan Agong with RM1bil to overthrow the unity government is a nonsensical slander.
