Free train rides for upcoming Thaipusam

GOMBAK: In conjunction with the upcoming Thaipusam celebration on Jan 25, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) will be offering free rides to commuters in the Klang Valley on Jan 24 and Jan 25, says Anthony Loke.

The Transport Minister said KTMB will also be expanding its services to operate on a 24-hour basis along several routes from Jan 23 to Jan 26.

He said the free rides would begin at midnight on Jan 24 and end at 11.59pm on Jan 25.

“This is the first time such an initiative is being carried out for users in the Klang Valley for Thaipusam.

“We hope this initiative will make Thaipusam celebrations more meaningful,” Loke told a press conference at Batu Caves here yesterday.

He added that all commuters can make use of this the two-day free ride period.

Loke said the free fares would reflect when commuters check in and out at gantries to the stations involved.

On the round-the-clock services, Loke said it is for the Batu Caves-Pulau Sebang-Batu Caves and the Batu Caves-Pelabuhan Klang-Batu Caves routes.

“Train rides along this route will also be free, regardless of where you get on,” said Loke.

The extended commuter services will begin as early as 9.55pm from Pulau Sebang to Batu Caves station on Jan 23.

The extra train services from Pelabuhan Klang to Batu Caves will meanwhile begin as early as 11.39pm.

Both will operate at a one-hour frequency.

“KTMB will also be readying additional services for users from Port Klang who can get a direct trip to Batu Caves after midnight,” said Loke.

Free Rapid feeder buses will also be provided in Kuala Lumpur and Penang on Jan 24 and Jan 25.

For Kuala Lumpur, this is for trips from the Pasar Seni hub to Batu Caves; from the Gombak LRT station to Batu Caves: and from the Kampung Batu MRT station to Batu Caves.
