Full-term Parliament law will deter disruptive coup plots, says Ahmad Maslan

PONTIAN: The introduction of a law that allows any government to remain in power and complete its full five-year term is the correct move to secure the country's political stability, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.

He said this will allow the elected government to be able to work without any disturbance or plot to topple the government.

“We do not want to see one Yang di-Pertuan Agong having to face four different Prime Ministers in one term,” he said.

“Despite having the support of 152 MPs, we are still hearing talk of efforts to disrupt the current government and claims that they have enough statutory declarations (SD), which is very disturbing and hinders us from doing our work for the people,” added the Umno supreme council member.

Ahmad said that what Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi previously suggested in introducing a new law to allow the government to serve a full term is good, adding that he also supports Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's challenge to the Opposition.

“I also support Anwar in challenging the opposition to table a motion of no-confidence in the coming Dewan Rakyat seating in February,” he said, adding that the Opposition's claims are nothing more than empty words.

He said this when met by reporters after conducting a working visit to the Pontian Public Works Department office here on Sunday (Jan 14).

Ahmad also called out Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor and other Opposition leaders to wake up, stop having delusional dreams of seeing the mirage of themselves having managed to form a government.

“They previously said that there would be a change in government in October, but when October came, nothing happened. So people like the Kedah Mentri Besar and his gang should stop this pointless act to topple the government,” he said.

On Saturday (Jan 13), Ahmad Zahid said a specific law should be introduced to allow any government to complete its full five-year term.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, this would end constant plots to topple the government.

Ahmad Zahid’s comments came in the wake of an alleged conspiracy called the “Dubai Move” where certain Opposition leaders allegedly attempted to buy over enough government MPs to deny the current administration the required simple parliamentary majority.

Top Opposition leaders have described such allegations as “nonsensical libel”.
