YONG PENG: Folks in Yong Peng will get a new RM1.2mil market when its construction completes in three months’ time, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

He said he was updated on the progress of the market during a discussion with Yong Peng District Council president Nur Faiz Jamil and Yong Peng assemblyman Ling Tian Soon yesterday.

The previous market was at least 70% destroyed in a fire on March 31, 2022. There were no casualties.

Back then, Dr Wee had asked Yong Peng assemblyman Ling to hand out a financial aid of RM1,000 to each of the traders affected by the fire.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Dr Wee who is Ayer Hitam MP, said the construction of the new market, located at Jalan Meng Seng here, was about 60% completed.

“It will take another three months for the construction to be fully completed,” he said.

He said the stalls in front of the market would also be upgraded with a cost of RM300,000.

During the meeting with Nur Faiz, Dr Wee said he also discussed the proposal to build a Yong Peng mini stadium which had long been delayed even though land for it had been allocated.

“We will do our best to realise this project for the people in Yong Peng,” said Dr Wee, who is MCA president.

At a separate programme, Dr Wee handed over a total of 10 hospital beds and 10 wheelchairs to the surau committees in Kampung Paya, Taman BCB, Taman Mewah, Kangkar Baru and Taman Kota.

“Each surau will receive two beds and two wheelchairs.

“We decided to donate the items to the committees because we found that many patients only need them for short-term use like going for hospital visits, or accident victims.

“This way, more people can benefit from the equipment,” he said, adding that it would be up to the surau committees to coordinate and lend the equipment to the community.

Dr Wee also urged those in need to get in touch with their respective surau for help if they want to borrow the equipment.
