Fixed term Parliament act would help reduce political instability, says Loke

BUTTERWORTH: The implementation of a fixed term Parliament act will reduce political issues during the five years of parliamentary term, says Anthony Loke.

The DAP secretary-general said the matter must be brought to Parliament first for the members to discuss and decide on it.

"We indeed agreed in principle that the act is good as it can reduce political issues during the Parliament five-term period.

"This system has been practised in the United Kingdom before where in the five-year period, the Parliament can be dissolved at will," he said during the press conference after witnessing a memorandum of understanding between Railway Assets Corporation (RAC) and Penang Housing Board (LPNPP).

The Transport Minister however said the matter was still being discussed by the Prime Minister Department for further studies.

He said he believed that the minister in charge, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said would be able to bring the suggestion to the Cabinet.

On Saturday (Jan 13), Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said a law should be introduced to allow any government to complete its full five-year term.

According to Ahmad Zahid, this would end constant plots to topple the government.

Ahmad Zahid's remarks were met with mixed views by politicians, with some saying that such a law could ensure political stability, while others described it as effort to curb democracy.

Ahmad Zahid's comments came in the wake of the alleged "Dubai Move" where certain Opposition leaders allegedly attempted to buy over government MPs to deny the current administration a parliamentary majority.

Top Opposition leaders have described such allegations as "nonsensical defamation".
