Remand extended for arson suspect

IPOH: The remand order for the man suspected of committing arson at the residence of Beruas MP Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham was extended until today, says the Perak police chief.

Comm Datuk Seri Yusri Hassan Basri said the man, whose remand order was supposed to end yesterday would remain in police custody for another day.

The application to have the suspect’s remand extended was granted by the Seri Manjung Magistrate’s Court.

“We will continue investigating to find out the extent of the suspect’s involvement in this case,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

Comm Mohd Yusri also said the result of the forensic investigation into the fire, which the Fire and Rescue Department carried out, would also be considered in the probe.

On Jan 10, three cars parked on the porch of Ngeh’s house in Ayer Tawar, were damaged when a Molotov cocktail was thrown into the house compound.

The suspect, who is in his 30s, was arrested by police in Shah Alam on Jan 12.

He was remanded to assist in the investigation under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire.
