Staying merry and healthy this February

GEORGE TOWN: It’s going to be a jam-packed February as several colourful and traditional events, coupled with the long school break, will be all packed into one big celebration.

Thousands of holidaymakers from far and near are expected to throng the Penang island next month to enjoy the festivities and sample the delicious food here, starting with the Lunar Year of the Dragon, or the Spring Festival on Feb 10.

To ensure smooth merrymaking and prevent any Covid-19 clusters, the state health authority will be on their toes to keep the contagious virus in check.

Penang health committee chairman Daniel Gooi said there would be constant monitoring, especially in high-risk locations such as wet markets, senior citizen homes, and immigration depots, among others.

He said with increased mobility during festivities, a spike in cases could not be ruled out.

“The main thing here is to be disciplined by following the standard operating procedures.

“For those who test positive for Covid-19, the Home Surveillance Order should be activated immediately, with a five-day quarantine to follow,” he said.

The exodus will start with the “balik kampung” reunion dinner on Feb 9, followed by the first day of the Chinese New Year (Feb 10), Valentine’s Day (Feb 14), and Chap Goh Meh (Feb 24).

Meanwhile, on the traffic front, State Traffic and Public Order Department chief Supt Zafri Zolkapli said traffic is expected to increase during that period.
