GEORGE TOWN: A senior police officer will be probed for attempted murder after a 40-year-old woman accused him of shoving her into the sea during a quarrel on the Penang Bridge on Monday.
Penang police chief Comm Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said the case will be investigated under Section 307 for attempted murder.
“Initial checks revealed that the 37-year-old man is a senior police officer from another state, while the woman is believed to be his girlfriend.
“We believe both of them got out from the car and began to quarrel at KM2.8 of the mainland-bound lane at about 7.45pm on Monday,” he said.
Comm Khaw said the woman claimed her boyfriend pushed her and she fell into the sea.
“We will probe this claim and get statements from other witnesses to the incident,” he said, adding that the senior police officer is still receiving treatment at the hospital.
“We will record his statement later. The woman ... did not suffer any injuries,” he said.
When asked if the senior officer would be remanded, Comm Khaw said they would have to get more statements from the other witnesses before deciding on the next course of action.
Comm Khaw added that the early probe revealed that the police officer is also facing a criminal case for voluntarily causing hurt under Section 323 of the Penal Code, over an incident which allegedly happened in the north-east district recently.
On Monday, a fight between the couple caused both of them to fall off the Penang Bridge.
A passer-by saw the incident and jumped into the sea to save both of them. They were then hauled up onto a fisherman’s boat and taken to the Batu Uban Jetty.
Yesterday, The Star ran an exclusive story about rogue cops, with the Inspector-General of Police admitting that there is a small segment of the police force that is delinquent.
Tan Sri Razarudin Husain had said that only about 2% of the police force was found to have committed wrongdoings last year from the 137,000-strong police force.
This means that about 2,740 personnel have been found to be rogue.
