PETALING JAYA: The increase in the Workers’ Union Affairs Programme grant announced by the Human Resources Minister has the full support of the Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC).

The union congress said the increase of RM5.8mil would positively impact workers' unions in the country.

"This grant has a big impact on the effort to see growth in union membership and the union movement," said MTUC president Mohd Effendy Abdul Ghani in a statement on Thursday (Jan 18).

"With this grant, unions can conduct more programmes, training and initiatives which emphasise workers, promote the union and increase membership.

Mohd Effendy said unions could participate in worker’s welfare programmes, especially in human capital development.

"It could also help to promote worker's rights through various programmes and develop the knowledge in 're-skilling' and 'up-skilling'. Workers unions can also increase their activities in advocacy to protect the rights of workers," added Mohd Effendy.
