TEAK trees about 30 years old are being felled in Perlis for revenue for the state government.
The logging process started in 2019 and will go through five phases until 2025, Utusan Malaysia reported. So far, 6,564 trees have been cut down.
Planted between 1992 and 1994, Perlis is the first state to plant teak trees along its roadsides.
The trees were not just to provide shade; they were also meant for future revenue.
The total revenue earned by the state government after the complete logging process will be about RM1mil.
“For each phase, the trees are examined to determine suitability for felling and whether they have reached maturity. Mature teak trees have a diameter of 30 inches or more,” said Perlis Forestry Department director Awang Shaffie Awang Ahmadni.
Mentri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli said: “The trees uproot easily and if left past maturity, they will be dangerous for road users.”
