Kangar’s deaf baker with a heart of gold

HE may be hearing-impaired but a man in Kangar has never let that deter him from mastering the art of baking, Sin Chew Daily reported.

Francis Rao, 38, who is deaf, is now the proud owner of a bakery in the Perlis capital.

After completing his special education in schools in Perlis, Penang and Johor, and his diploma studies at a vocational college, he dreamt of a career in baking.

He then enrolled in a baking school in Penang before opening Yummy Tummy Bakery in his hometown in 2013.

On the counter in his shop, a card reads: “I am sorry, I am deaf” while he wears a similar card on the front of his shirt.

Regardless of his disability, his cakes and breads are said to be a hit among locals.

When approached to contribute to the daily’s Pine Crane Night, an event promoting filial piety, on Feb 16, the baker promptly agreed to donate 100 cakes.

According to his mother, Rao has been charitable since young and now as an adult, donates baked goods to the needy.

> The daily also reported that Malaysian actor Hero Tai and his Ukrainian model wife Tatiana Lin are now the proud parents of a baby girl.

“It’s a beautiful 3.6kg newborn girl with big eyes,” the first-time father announced on social media.

Lin, 25, gave birth on Thursday morning.
