Wan Junaidi downplays talk of being appointed next Sarawak governor

PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has downplayed talk of him being appointed as the next Sarawak governor, saying that is just social media speculation at the moment.

"For now, it's treated as social media speculation until an official announcement is made by the state government," he said briefly when contacted Saturday (Jan 20).

A news portal reported that Wan Junaidi had quit his post as Dewan Negara president and would be the next Sarawak governor.

The government had nominated Wan Junaidi as the Dewan Negara president in June last year, succeeding Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim.

He was an MP for seven terms since 1990, before deciding not to defend his Santubong seat in the 15th General Election.

The current Sarawak governor is Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who has held the position since March 2014.

It is learnt that Taib’s current term as the Sarawak governor is expected to end at the end of next month.
