Country's first AI faculty to begin lessons at UTM's KL campus in October

JOHOR BARU: The country’s first artificial intelligence (AI) study centre at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) will begin its academic programme in October.

UTM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Fauzi Ismail said the Faculty of AI would be located at the university’s Kuala Lumpur branch.

“Some 120 students will be the faculty pioneers (and) start their lessons for the 2024/25 academic year in October.

“The duration of their course will be about three years,” he said when met after presenting his New Year mandate to UTM staff and students at its Skudai campus here on Tuesday (Jan 23).

Ahmad Fauzi thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for having the trust in the university to set up the AI study centre.

He said that UTM was no stranger to AI and has the foundation through its expertise and experience in robotics technology built over the past 20 years.

During the tabling of Budget 2024 on Oct 13 last year, Anwar announced that the country’s first AI study centre would be set up at UTM with an initial allocation of RM20mil to intensify the exploration of cross-disciplinary AI.
