KUALA LUMPUR: Four policemen have been arrested for allegedly extorting a ketum distributor.
It is learnt that one night in November, four men claiming to be from Bukit Aman's Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) went to the complainant's house in Taman Desa Gombak here.
They checked the house and upon finding 20 packets of ketum liquid, they demanded the complainant to pay RM10,000 for them to turn a blind eye to the discovery.
After some negotiations, the complainant, in his 30s, reportedly paid RM5,000.
The group also gave an assurance to the complainant that he would not get caught.
The following month, one of the cops contacted the complainant and asked for RM1,000 to be transferred monthly to a bank account. The complainant complied.
He contacted the complainant again this month to ask for money, and the complainant transferred a further RM500 before lodging a police report.
Details of the case have been circulating on the WhatsApp and Telegram messaging platforms.
When contacted, Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid said all four suspects had been remanded to help with investigations.
"We have referred the investigation paper to the deputy public prosecutor for further action. The remand of the four suspects ends today (Tuesday, Jan 23)," he added.
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, when contacted, confirmed that the four suspects were policemen on duty in the state.
"We are... suspending these four from duties and will conduct a disciplinary probe.
"I want to warn my personnel to stay away from criminal activities and misconduct as we will take stern action against those caught," he added.
