Floods: Kuala Krai folk geared up to face fourth wave

KUALA KRAI: As relentless rain persists for the past two days, residents in low-lying areas of Kuala Krai, particularly those near the river, are geared up to face the anticipated fourth wave of flooding in the state.

Siti Zulaika Awang, 25, a resident of Kampung Kebun Pisang in Chenulang, highlighted her house’s vulnerability to flooding due to its proximity to the river, saying she has taken proactive measures by relocating equipment and household items to higher ground for safety.

"People here are already prepared to face the next wave of floods because our house is close to the river.

"If the river starts overflowing, we will immediately move to the nearby temporary relief centre (PPS) at SK Chenulang," she told Bernama, here Wednesday (Jan 24).

Meanwhile, Ain Syafiqah Mohd Zuki, 25, said she had to take a boat to work because the ferry was not in service due to Sungai Kelantan’s rising water levels in Kampung Pasir Kelang.

"This morning I was late to work because the boat prioritised school students first.

"During heavy rains, the ferry does not operate because the river crossing becomes dangerous. We are afraid of accidents," she said.

Bernama also observed some residents moving their vehicles to higher and safer ground to prevent damage.

MetMalaysia, in a statement Wednesday, issued a severe level warning of continuous heavy rains in Terengganu and nine localities in Kelantan until Thursday (Jan 25).

The areas in Kelantan are Tumpat, Pasir Mas, Kota Bharu, Jeli, Tanah Merah, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh and Kuala Krai. - Bernama
