Sarawak's new Yang di-Pertua Negeri to be sworn in on Jan 29

KUCHING: Sarawak's new Yang di-Pertua Negeri is scheduled to be sworn in next Monday (Jan 29).

Pending assemblyman Violet Yong wrote on Facebook on Thursday (Jan 25) that she would be attending the swearing-in ceremony.

"We received the invitation two days ago. The ceremony on Monday begins with arrival of guests at 2.30pm at the Sarawak Legislative Assembly building.

"The swearing in is at 3pm," Yong, from DAP, said when contacted.

She added that the name of the new Governor was not mentioned.

A source confirmed that the ceremony was scheduled to be held on Jan 29.

The term of the current Governor Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud ends on Feb 28.

No official announcement has been made on his replacement, but The Malaysian Insight reported last week that Tan Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar had resigned as Dewan Negara president to be appointed as the next Governor.

Abdul Taib, 87, has served as the seventh Governor since March 1, 2014.

Prior to that, he was Sarawak's longest-serving chief minister from 1981 to 2014.
