PETALING JAYA: The international community must ensure Israel complies with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling, says Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
He said in a statement on Saturday (Jan 27) that he wholeheartedly welcomes the ICJ ruling ordering Israel to take six provisional measures in the case brought by South Africa on the Application of the Convention on the Prevention of the Crime and Genocide in the Gaza Strip.
"In upholding the ICJ's ruling, Malaysia urges the international community to boldly and decisively ensure Israel compliance with the six provisional measures ordered by the Court," said Mohamad.
"Malaysia is ready to explore all avenues in supporting the rulings by the ICJ and insists that an immediate cessation of hostilities is the necessary next step to allow all the six provisional measures to take effect swiftly," he added.
He said that the ruling is an important step in "safeguarding humanity and the sanctity of international law."
"Recognising the urgent need in Gaza duly acknowledged by the majority of the judges in ICJ, the government of Malaysia reaffirms its full commitment and readiness in rendering full support to the international efforts aimed at delivering relief aid to Gaza," added Mohamad.
He said that Malaysia views the landmark decision as the step in the right direction towards ending the hostilities in Gaza, which currently stands as the most severe humanitarian crisis since World War II.
"Malaysia applauds South Africa for its bold initiative in bringing the case against Israel to the ICJ. The decision of the ICJ in The Hague showed that the judges had carefully assessed and considered the facts presented to them on the obvious violations against the Genocide Convention," he said.
