Installing canvas along collapsed banks of Sg Kelantan unsuitable, says Drainage and Irrigation Dept

KOTA BHARU: The installation of water-resistant canvases in erosion-prone areas along the banks of Sungai Kelantan is not an immediate solution to address the issue, says Kelantan Drainage and Irrigation Department assistant director Marinamarican Abdullah.

He said a request had been sent to the government for action concerning the situation.

"Quick solutions such as the installation of water-resistant canvas are considered somewhat risky because the plants on the banks could die, leading to faster erosion," he explained.

He made these comments to reporters after inspecting the collapsed river bank at Taman Haji Hadi near Kampung Pendek, here on Monday (Jan 29).

State Works, Infrastructure, Water, and Rural Development Committee deputy chairman Saizol Ismail was also present.

Meanwhile, Saizol said monitoring found there was a 200m-long river bank collapse in the area, posing a risk of further erosion in the residential area.

Previously, it was reported that five families residing in Taman Haji Hadi near Kampung Pendek here lived in fear after a recent river bank collapse incident along Sungai Kelantan believed to be just a few metres away from their settlement. - Bernama
