Policeman remanded over rape complaint


IPOH: A police sergeant has been remanded until Jan 31 for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl near Parit last year, says Perak police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri. “The man was arrested on Sunday and he is being remanded at the Perak Tengah district police station until Wednesday,” he told reporters here yesterday.

“The case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code,” Comm Mohd Yusri said, adding that several witnesses have been summoned.

“We will investigate the matter transparently to ensure justice for the victim,” he said, adding that police personnel under investigation may also be punished by the force’s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department.

The girl, who lodged a police report on Jan 20, claimed that the sergeant had assaulted her twice in July and October last year.

The assault was said to have occured in the parking lot of a supermarket near Parit, about 30km from here.
