His Majesty can unite the people, say social activists

PETALING JAYA: An important role of the King is to uphold unity in Malaysia, and social activists hope to see that under the reign of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim.

Tawfik Ismail, the son of Malaysia’s second deputy prime minister Tun Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman said the fight to make Malaysia more united is crucial.

“I think His Majesty has shown his willingness to be fair to everyone as Sultan Ibrahim has ruled Johor.

“I hope His Majesty does the same for the rest of the country.

“Importantly, His Majesty continues to unite east and west Malaysia to make everyone feel part of one nation,” he said.

Tawfik said he hoped His Majesty would strengthen the role and image of the King, preserve the institution and uphold the constitution.

“There might come a time where the Agong might need to be reminded of his responsibilities and duties under the constitution, and the onus falls on the responsible leaders of the country to do so,” said Tawfik, referring to it as one of the challenges the Prime Minister would face.

“Our leaders must be knowledgeable about the constitution so that they can advise properly,” he said.

Social activist Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye expressed a positive outlook for Sultan Ibrahim’s reign as a caring and progressive Ruler.

“Sultan Ibrahim is a champion for unity and discipline. Despite his sternness, His Majesty has an amiable personality and is well-liked and respected by all,” he said, adding that the new King has an unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people, particularly the poor of all races.

Lee also praised His Majesty for placing emphasis on the fight against corruption and speaking against racial discrimination.

“Malaysians are looking forward to His Majesty’s reign for the next five years to ensure stability and economic progress for all,” said Lee.
