GEORGE TOWN: The RM3mil expansion of SJKT Subramaniya Barathee here is expected to be completed next month.
By then, the 72-year-old school will have 15 classrooms, plus other activity rooms.
School board chairman J. Govindasamy said the new rooms – which include a computer lab, workshop, virtual reality studio as well as music and art room – could be put to use by mid-2024.
"There will also be an additional room equipped with a kitchen and small playground for preschool children," he said.
He said the existing building, which was built in 2014 after the school was relocated to the current site in Gelugor, only consists of nine classrooms.
"In 2015, we only had 208 pupils but the number has doubled up to 425 this year. We need 15 classrooms to accommodate all pupils," he added.
He said of the RM3mil needed for the expansion project, RM800,000 was received from the Education Ministry.
"We collected RM500,000 in a fundraising dinner and another RM500,000 from another event. We are still short of RM1.2mil," he said.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, who inspected the progress of the expansion work earlier, has allocated another RM100,000 for the school.
