Umno to continue seeking full pardon for Najib, says Lokman

KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will start a nationwide petition to push for a full pardon for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, says Umno communications director Datuk Lokman Noor Adam.

He said the Umno supreme council decided on this after a two-hour meeting chaired by Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi held at its headquarters here on Saturday (Feb 3).

"We will start the drive when we meet the Umno division heads in a few days' time," said Lokman, who is a party supreme council member.

"We ask everyone to respect the decision by the Pardons Board.

"However, the statement by the Pardons Board has errors. It stated that Najib will only be released earliest on Aug 23, 2028, which is not accurate.

"There are other factors to be taken into account, such as only serving two-thirds of the sentence and the annual 15 days' leave.

"He can also apply for parole and home detention," said Lokman.

On Friday (Feb 2), the Pardons Board announced that it had decided to commute Najib's jail term from 12 years to six with a release date of Aug 23, 2028, and to reduce his fine from RM210mil to RM50mil.
