Labourer charged in Perlis with trafficking 16kg of cannabis


KANGAR: A labourer has been charged in a Magistrate's Court here with drug trafficking involving 16kg of cannabis.

However, no plea was recorded from Muhammad Helmiee Azmi, 23, after the charge was read out before Magistrate Nurshahida Abdul Rahim on Monday (Feb 5).

He was accused of committing the offence near the Malaysia-Thai border at Kampung Melayu, Padang Besar, at 7.20am on Jan 24.

The charge was framed under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which provides for the death sentence, or life imprisonment and 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

The court set April 1 for mention pending the chemist report.
