KOTA KINABALU: Repair works for the Tenom Pangi Hydro Power Plant, which was temporarily shut down following landslides and mud flood last year, has cost RM60mil so far.
Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Mohd Yaakob Jaafar in a statement here on Monday (Feb 5), said various challenges were also faced by the utility company when trying to do restoration works on the hydro power station.
He however reiterated that the station is expected to start operating again in March.
“The electric dam going through Padas River has three turbines with 22 megawatts (MW) each.
“Following the natural disaster incident on Oct 31, 2022, there were major damages to the civil structure and the plant, causing all three turbines to be non-functioning. SESB lost 66MW of power generation capacity from this plant.
“Repair works are actively being carried out with completion deadline in March for the first turbine, June for the second turbine and September for the third turbine,” he said in the statement.
Mohd Yaakob said cleanup on the hydro water tunnel is also being carried out by SESB personnel and the appointed contractor, where once completed, water from Padas River can be channelled through the tunnel and rotated to the Unit 3 turbine.
