KOTA KINABALU: The woman who was found dead in a pond at Kampung Mangga in Tawau was trying to save her seven-year-old son.
Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said a post-mortem confirmed that 41-year-old Indonesian housewife Suriani Amir and her seven-year-old son Risdy Rudi died from drowning on Tuesday (Feb 6).
As such, he said that police ruled out foul play and were investigating the case as a sudden death report.
He said the post-mortem conducted by a pathologist at the Tawau Hospital Wednesday (Feb 7) showed no traces of any crime committed on the victim as there were no bodily bruises, cuts, cuts or rape.
Further investigations by police indicated that the boy who had gone to the pond was struggling in the water when the mother went in to save him.
"Both drowned," he said, adding that investigations were still in progress.
Their bodies were found in the pond area by villagers who immediately informed police.
In an immediate statement on Tuesday (Feb 6) following the recovery of the bodies, ACP Jasmin said that police needed to get the post-mortem report before ascertaining if the two were victims of drowning or murder.
