‘Job hub’ eyeing Brits busted

KUALA LUMPUR: A call centre targeting victims from the United Kingdom with fake jobs has been busted following a raid at a condominium in Taman Wahyu, Jinjang here.

Sentul police chief Asst Comm Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari said the condominium was raided on Tuesday, during which eight people were arrested.

They comprised seven men and a woman, aged between 16 and 28.

“The police also seized nine computers, 19 handphones, two routers, two modems, a keyring and an access card to the condominium unit.

“Preliminary investigations showed that the syndicate offered fake jobs to victims based in the United Kingdom.

“They would send random messages through social media touting job adverts using UK-based phone numbers,” he said.

Interested victims would be instructed to create an account on a website called “Globesailor v88”.

They would then be instructed to “like” advertisements on holiday packages.

The victims would be asked to make a deposit before the so-called jobs are given. They were promised commissions ranging from 0.5% to 5%.

All transactions were done using the USDT cryptocurrency.

It is believed that the group could rake in around US$3,000 (RM14,294) per day.

“The group had started operations earlier this year.

“We are still investigating the syndicate to determine if other call centres are linked to them,” said ACP Ahmad Sukarno.

He said Sentul police are also furthering investigations into the group.

ACP Ahmad Sukarno added that the police will inform their foreign counterparts if required.
