PETALING JAYA: Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming, whose official car was caught on camera tailgating an ambulance, clarified that his driver had given way to the emergency vehicle and had not intended to break traffic laws.

Nga said that the incident occurred on the PLUS North-South expressway on Feb 3 when he was on his way to attend an official event in Ipoh.

He said his driver spotted a private ambulance trailing their car and promptly gave way to the vehicle, which he learnt was heading to the scene of a road accident.

Nga said as there was traffic congestion, his driver tailed the ambulance as he tried to find a way to resume their journey to Ipoh.

"I stress that I have always given priority to rescue efforts and did not intend to break the law. I have ordered my officer to give full cooperation to the authorities and am prepared to settle any fine imposed on my driver if he is found to have committed an offence." he wrote in a Facebook post.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri was quoted as saying that police had recorded a statement from the minister's driver on Thursday (Feb 8).

He said a police report was also lodged over a video showing a minister's vehicle tailgating an ambulance on its way to an accident site at KM305 of the North-South Expressway at 10:27am on Feb 3.

Mohd Yusri said police will call up other witnesses to the case and examine CCTV recordings obtained from PLUS.

He said police also have a dashcam recording taken from the ambulance.
